step 2

Add the black pepper powder and a small amount of cornstarch gradually to the heated potatoes, about a teaspoon at a time, until the desired thickness is achieved. It is important that the potatoes are warm for this process. Alternatively, tapioca starch or potato starch can be used, although they may not be as commonly found in most kitchens.

In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to around 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Carefully add the potato cubes to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry them in batches if needed. Allow the potato cubes to cook for about 5-7 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.

Once they are cooked to perfection, use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the potato bites to a paper towel-lined plate. This will help absorb any excess oil. While they are still hot, sprinkle some salt and your preferred seasonings over the top. I personally love using garlic powder and paprika for an extra kick of flavor. The ketchup can never go wrong!

And there you have it – delicious deep fried potato bites that are sure to be a hit with everyone! Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce like ketchup or ranch dressing, or enjoy them as is. These little potato bites of heaven are perfect for game day gatherings, parties, or even just a cozy night in. So, grab your potatoes and get frying – you won’t be disappointed!

Pro Tips

  1. Avoid overcooking the potatoes as it can result in a waterlogged and mushy texture. To determine if they are done, use a knife to check for resistance. If the knife easily goes through the potatoes without any resistance, they are cooked properly.
  2. Ricing the potatoes gives them a smooth, airy, and incredibly fluffy texture. While they may have a slightly coarse consistency, using a ricer ensures the most delicate approach to achieving the fluffiest mashed potatoes. If you do not have a ricer, food mill, or hand masher, an electric hand mixer can be utilized as an alternative. However Excessive mixing of the potatoes can make it gluey.
  3. It’s optional to add garlics, but it adds a special flavour to the potatoes.
